Camp Prairie Creek

2018

Important Camp Prairie Creek Update:

Due to some transitions at the Muncie Sanitary District, we are unable to host Camp Prairie Creek for the summer of 2024. Over the next few months, we will be reevaluating our goals and capabilities, and we look forward to hosting similar programs in the future. Thank you for your understanding, and we hope all of our campers are having a great summer.

Camp Prairie Creek, sponsored by the Muncie Sanitary District and Stormwater Management, is a free youth environmental day camp for youth going into 1st through 8th grade. It is a day camp that runs from 9a-3p Monday through Friday.

Campers will learn about being environmental stewards through recycling, water education, plant identification, interactions with live animals, and more. Campers will also explore nature through hikes in the woods and learn how to fish. The camp is first to come first serve through registration, and registration will open in July of each year. Please note that all campers will be responsible for bringing their own lunch.

Camp Prairie Creek is a free youth environmental day camp for youth participants living in Muncie and Delaware County, ranging from 1st through 8th grade. The Stormwater Management Department and Prairie Creek Reservoir created and hosted the first annual Camp Prairie Creek in the summer of August 2009.

The birth of Camp Prairie Creek came from the idea that local youth needed more accessible water education and recreational opportunities since the City’s only public pool would be closed the Summer of 09′ due to financial restraints. Stormwater Management and Prairie Creek Reservoir joined together to educate local youth about water-related issues and outdoor recreational safety while maintaining a strong emphasis on preserving our environment.

Many activities and lessons taught at the camp were derived from the Project WET curriculum, which had a lot of emphasis on water quality, pollution prevention and the water cycle. Other activities included education about recycling, conservation, vermicomposting (worm composting), trees, fish and wildlife, macroinvertebrates, mapping and outdoor recreational safety. A tree was planted at the site of the first annual Camp Prairie Creek, near the lodge where many activities took place.

The long week of fun and education is always celebrated with a family fun day cookout the last day which includes games, pontoon boat rides around the reservoir, swimming and fishing. Families are invited to attend and hang out with their campers all day and enjoy a relaxing day at the beach.

On the final family fun day, each camper is awarded a Delaware County Youth Environmental Stewardship Certificate for their participation and newfound interest in helping to preserve the environment in all that they do.

We are pleased to announce that Camp Prairie Creek won the Clyde W. Hibbs Conservation Education Award from the Robert Cooper Audubon Society for its creative strategies for engaging children with nature and teaching them principles of sustainable living.
