White River Clean-Up

The resheduled 2011 White River Clean-Up was a huge success!  We had nearly 325 volunteers come out and participate and picked up 4,800 pounds of trash and 35 tires!  Not bad even though were forced to stay on land!  Thanks to all volunteers who showed up and supported the event.

The White River Clean-Up happens every year in September, and is a state wide public service event stretching most of the entirety of the White River.  Many counties inlcuding Delaware, Hamilton, Monroe, Madison and Morgan Counties participate in cleaning up the White River on or near the same date in September.  People come together from all communities to help clean the White River and thousands of pounds of trash are removed every year including large amounts of tires.

In Delaware County alone, close to 60,000 pounds of trash and nearly 400 tires have been pulled from the White River!  The Clean-up has also brought close to 1,200 volunteers from the local community together to participate in the past 4 years.  The White River Clean-Up covers close to 15 miles of river from the Old Indiana Steel and Wire Plant all the way to Canoe Country in Daleville.

Volunteers walk the bank, river and land where possible removing debris from and around the river.  When that is not possible, volunteers use canoes to navigate through the water filling them up along the way with the debris they find. 

Many sponsors and partners come together to make this event one of Delaware County's most accomplishing community work days.  Such past partners include; Indiana American Water, Muncie Sanitary District, Muncie Delaware Clean and Beautiful, Stormwater Management, Town of Yorktown, The Bureau of Water Quality, American Rivers,  Minnetrista Cultural Center, MITS,  Ball State University, White River Watershed Project, Normal City Fly Fishers Club, Canoe Country, Bell Aquaculture, Union Chapel Church, Grace Baptist Church,  the National Guard, HAM Radio, Muncie Parks Department, Prairie Creek Reservoir, Alpha Water Conditioning, Mid States Concessions and Walmart.

The White River Clean-Up would never be possible without the major contributions,sponsorship and in-kind contributions of Indiana American Water, Muncie Delaware Clean and Beautiful, Muncie Sanitary District, Stormwater Management,the Town of Yorktown and Minnetrista Cultural Center.
