History of The Muncie Sanitary District
The Muncie Sanitary District was established by ordinance on June 1,
1964 upon enabling legislation of the State of Indiana. Its three
member Board of Commissioners administers municipal solid waste
programs, sewers, and wastewater treatment for Muncie, Indiana.
The 138 employees under professional management lead the nation in
industrial wastewater pretreatment and solid waste recycling. Muncie
recycles an entire 30% of its 34,000 ton solid waste stream per year.
The goal of the MSD is to construct, reconstruct, maintain, repair and
regulate the use of all connecting and intercepting sewers at the most
economical cost available. Also, to be responsible for the collection
and removal of solid waste materials and to prevent the pollution of
water courses within the MSD boundaries and to protect the public
health.
MSD administration is responsible for public relations, including, but
not limited to, presentations, media contacts, neighborhood meetings
and business expos, along with public involvement.
